About the artist

Now living in Montreal, Hong Kong born Ngan Siu-Mui is the disciple of the great masters Chao Shao-An and Leung Tse-Kong. Since her first 1981 solo exhibition in Hong Kong City Hall, she has been acclaimed as an artist conversant with Chinese calligraphy, painting, seal carving and poem. Throughout the years she has been invited to hold exhibitions and lectures in universities, museums, and cultural organizations in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Canada and United States.

With western cultural influence, her work has evolved in a unique style. She uses mixed medium and techniques from the east and the west to infuse the energy and elegance of Chinese brush movements into new substrate. This contrasts dramatically with her former use of classical Chinese water-color.

The talent and knowledge of the artist have been put to contribution in many ways … — her calligraphy in the film Red Violin and in the advertisement of the Xi’an Exhibition held at the Quebec Civilization Museum — Merging Colours, a film focusing on Chinese artists, features her as a prominent artist working in Montreal — her calligraphy had been engraved in stones at the invitation of the Xi'an Calligraphy Stele Committee and the Museum of Shaanxi (China) — she was invited to be one of the main speakers in art conferences and seminars in China and Seoul —
