Versatile in poem, calligraphy, painting and seal carving
~ about Ngan Siu Mui’s art creation [by Law Fu1]
Ngan Siu Mui is an versatile artist. She is not only proficient in poetry, calligraphy and painting,
but she is also skillful in seal carving. In any of her paintings, the inscription of poems,
calligraphy, and seal carving are done by herself. There are few artists with this distinctive ability,
especially women.
Seal Carving takes the first place:
Looking at each of her seal carving works, it is really assiduous to bring the composition and
characters selection into harmony. Her Yin (concave) engraving seals demonstrate that she has
delved deeply into the seals style of Han dynasty.
Cursive script calligraphy is the best:
Her use of cursive script calligraphy in painting inscriptions is more appropriate to match
the eclectic style of the Lingnan School. Her cursive script calligraphy is more proficient
than the other three scripts (clerical, regular and running). The severity and speed of
her brush movements astound people like the beauty of undulating waves.
Poetic paintings with style:
Most of Ngan Siu Mui’s artworks are allegorical without pandering to the taste of common folks.
This is truly respectable and admirable!
